I was tempted to do this post after my review of the Braun Silk Epil 7 Skin Spa epilator. That post was already too long to incorporate a full blown list on tips for epilation so here you go, these are tips that I've been following and have learnt from experience. I hope you find these helpful.
- Always trim your body hair to the right length - this means your hair should not be too long - each epilator lists down the optimal length. Now you don't need to take out a rules to measure the hair length, if you have shaved then lets say 3-4 days after shaving should get your hair back to a desirable length. If you have slow hair growth (lucky you!!!) you can wait for about a week or so.
- Two three days before epilation try and give your skin a good exfoliation. You can either use the attachment that comes with the new SkinSpa epilator or use a nice loofah to scrub away all dead cells. Smoother skin gives better epilation.
- To avoid any pain, take a piece of ice or a cold ice bag and rub it all over the area you are going to epilate. The ice numbs the area reducing the pain. After epilating for about 4-5 times you will anyways get used to it and won't feel the pain.
- Before epilation make sure the skin is washed and clean but is devoid of any moisturizers or cream. If you do have an epilator that can be used under water then wet your skin with plain water and then epilate. (note: only very few epilators can be used wet so make sure you know whether your epilator can be used wet or not)
- Always hold the epilator head at 90 degrees to your skin. This makes sure that the hair gets plucked out properly without catching any delicate skin in the blades. This also gives a neat epilation.
- Stretch the area being epilated with one hand, this again makes it easier for the epilator to pull out hair without causing pain.
- Do not use the epilator on any broken or bruised skin - let the area heal before epilating.
- For use on the underarms make sure you stretch your arm all the way up and backwards so that the skin is tightly pulled. This area is sensitive with delicate skin. It is also advisable to use the attachment with your epilator that is specially meant for delicate skin areas. Here again you need to make sure that you are not wearing any deodorant before or after epilation. Give a gap of atleast 1 day before wearing any deodorant. This is to ensure that the pores of the skin that have freshly been cleaned up don't get exposed to the spray (there is a whole bunch of scientific documentation out there explaining why this is important, I won't go into that here)
- After epilation gently rub the area with your hand. After a few minutes you can apply a gentle body lotion over the area. If you have extremely sensitive skin and are prone to bumps then you can also apply a calamine lotion to soothe your skin.
- If possible epilate after taking a warm water bath, this loosens the hair making epilation easier.
And whatever you do, please do make sure to clean the epilator head as per instructions by the brand. This will ensure that you get a smooth epilation each time and will also make your product last longer.
Hope you find these tips useful. Do let me know if you have made up your mind to start epilating for smooth silky skin :)

ReplyDeletegreat tips.. got a new epilator, but not able to remove hairs from epilator, how do you clean it??
ReplyDeletesorry for the delay in responding, don't know how I missed your comment - epilators come with tiny brushes that should be used to 'brush away' the hair. If that doesn't work try using a sensitive toothbrush and some alcohol to clean the epilator head
