What To Wear During Pregnancy - Stay Fashionable

Pregnancy brings about a lot of changes in a woman's body. I've heard that women become concsious of how they look but trust me, if this is your planned pregnancy, the joy of having a life grow inside you is beyond all looks and appearances.

What To Wear During Pregnancy - Stay Fashionable

Looking fabulous during this time only adds to your happiness and gives you confidence that this is the best phase of your life so far. So, here are some tips based on my own personal experience.

1. Be proud of your bump. The bump in most cases doesn't really start to show until the third month. Once it does, flaunt it, it's something to be proud of and not hide (unless for some reason you need to keep the news under wraps!)

2. Always wear comfortable clothes. I stopped wearing fitted clothes like jeans etc from day 1, the reason being I wanted no physical discomfort or stress on the womb. You can decide for youself what feels comfortable. Do not purchase maternity clothes in the first trimester unless you are really growing in size rapidly. As time progresses so will the size of your bump.

3. 2nd month onwards visit maternity stores to find out clothes that are specially made for maternity specially if you like to wear pants or leggings. I got 2 very comfortable pairs of maternity leggings from MAX stores, 1 pair of jeggings from H&M (gifted by my sis), 1 pair of jeans and a pair of leggings from H&M. I also bought 4 cotton full length dresses/kurtis. Since it was summers and hormonal changes were making me feel awfully hot, these came in very handy. Some of my old clothes like western tops and kurtis actually fit me fine right uptil the beginning of the third trimester. If you are working you definitely need more clothes because who likes to wear the same things again and again.

Maternity pants and leggings are a must have. They are amazingly comfortable and give a little bit of support to your growing belly.

3. Buy bra extenders - they will help you save a lot on lingerie. I bought 3 new pairs of bras and the rest I managed with extenders. Remember for nursing you will need separate bras and that too you need to purchase in the last month when your breasts are the right size. They will grow once you start feeding as well so invest wisely.

4. Underwear - I grew one size during the second trimester and another size up in the 8th month. There are special maternity underwear as well but I didn't need them personally. I prefer bikini style underwear but hipsters felt more comfortable during and after pregnancy.

5. Shrugs - all my shrugs came in very handy. While I flaunted my bump throughout my pregnancy, I did use a shrug to make my outfits look more polished for work. A shrug also works well if you are wearing an older garment that looks just a wee bit tighter than you would want it to be, yet feels comfortable to wear.

6. Shoes/slippers - in the second trimester when my feet swelled up (almost in the 6th month) I outgrew my old ballerinas and slippers overnight. One fine day I woke up and nothing seemed to fit. I had my mom send over her shoes (a pair of basic ballerinas from Sketchers) that I wore throughout the rest of my pregnancy. I had my sister pick up a pair of household slippers for me one size bigger than my existing pair and thankfully I didn't outgrow these. (The reason I wasn't shopping myself was due to limited exertion allowed as my pregnancy was high risk)

7. New socks - if you wear socks and your feet are swell up you'll need a bigger size for sure.
Depending on the season you will have to tweak the above to suit your needs.

This is about it. Go stylish as you flaunt your bump, take regular photos that will later remind you of this incredible journey, and enjoy yourself in whatever makes you feel happy! I took one pic every single day mostly in the office restroom since I wanted to capture each day in some form. They are basic mirror selfies nothing grand. If you have the time you could get professional pictures taken each week as well!

This is your time, don't listen to people telling you you're wasting too much money on clothes that would later not fit, do as your heart desires and stay fashionable, always!!

Pregnancy Second Trimester

Second trimester of pregnancy can be considered the honeymoon period of sorts. This is the time when you should start to gain back your appetite. You will be somewhat used  to the initial hormonal changes that were driving you nuts in the first trimester.

Second trimester is also the time when your next major ultrasound scan will be conducted. When I went in for my scan I was ecstatic and could barely control my tears as I saw my little one - head, body,  legs, arms and those cute tiny hands and feet. The feeling is out of this world.

Ethnic Wear During Pregnancy
Ethnic Wear During Pregnancy

The only downside for me were two cysts on my baby's head which suggested that I should get extra checks to determine likelihood of down syndrome and other such diseases. The doctor said my age also played a role here and hence the tests were important to get done. I kept my heart in the hands of God and let my fears vanish.

As time progressed I started experiencing baby movements, tiny little flutters which changed to noticeable kicks as time progressed. I was back in office and my spirits were in a much better shape.

One important thing I learnt was how important it was to keep a gap in between medicines specially calcium and iron otherwise they are not absorbed properly. Some doctors forget to mention this but it's better to have a minimum gap of 2 hours between these two medicines. Take calcium with milk while iron is best absorbed once you have had some citrus food or best on an empty stomach.

Second trimester is the time when your bump will start showing, you might need new clothes, I did. I decided to invest in 4 full length dresses/kurtis which I could grow in. They were all anarkali style where the middle stitching ends just beneath the breasts giving the garment enough room on the belly area. Those still fit me well into my third trimester.

If your bras have started feeling tight, measure yourself. In my case the cup size remained the same while the band size increased. This meant I really didn't need a new bra, I needed bra extenders. I got a set of 5 from amazon and it turned out to be a cost effective saviour.

A few things that you must be careful about:

1. No stretching of hands above your head level as it puts undue strain on your belly; no bending with legs straight, if you have to bend, squat a little and then pick up whatever you need to. I used to lift things with my foot to avoid bending completely. If in doubt consult your doctor.

2. Vaginal hygiene - ask your doctor for a good vaginal wash and cream to ensure no infection is there. A vaginal infection can spread into the womb making it dangerous for your little one.

3. Waxing: is completely fine as long as you are used to it. If you've never done it before now is not the time to experiment since the skin can be very sensitive.

4. Keep your makeup and skin care simple and chemical free as  much as possible. I  invested in a virgin  coconut oil bottle (bought from amazon) which served as a moisturiser and makeup remover. The only makeup I wore everyday to work was my Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation which is safe to use during pregnancy. Retin-A products and those with salicylic acid are to be avoided completely. Trust me at first it's difficult to let go of everything (you'll realize how many chemicals your skin ingests everyday!) But for that little life inside of you, you'll go all the way to avoid chemicals in your skin care.

5. Stick to flat shoes to prevent  any fall, don't buy new ones unless you really have to since your shoe size will change as you enter the third trimester.

6. As your belly grows it will be difficult to cut your own nails, go in for a pedicure or take someone's help. Unfortunately I had to do mine on my own and it became a challenge each time specially since toe nail growth increased considerably due to the hormones.

7. Listen to your body, stop and relax no matter what the situation. Depending on how the baby is positioned inside you, there will be times when each step would be difficult to take. Don't worry and don't try to match pace with others.

Second trimester seemed to fly by the fastest.
This a good time to start reading the Garbha Sanskaar or listening to it's music. The child can start hearing your voice and these chants and rhythmic sounds will help develop the child's brain as well. This is what I read and was told by friends so I tried to do it as much as possible. It is important that not only you but your husband also reads this. It is said that the child will learn from it's father's voice too. A screaming foul mouthed parent will pass on the same traits to the child while a loving parent with a soft gentle voice will lead to a calm baby. You can make this part of your couple time or just have it play in the background while you go about your individual tasks.

Eat right, stay happy and connect with your baby, these should be your only focus activities at this time. Oh and yes, do make sure all your queries are answered by your doctor, each woman goes through something unique since we all have different bodies, no question is trivial!
Stay blessed!

Nursing Your Baby - Importance and Style Guide

Ever since I got pregnant I new I wanted to nurse my baby. As a first time mom I had no idea about special clothing for breastfeeding or about the agonies associated with it.

First I'd like to focus on what you need to keep in mind if you plan to breastfeed your baby. Breastfeeding is said to help the baby grow healthy and is surely advised to all new mothers.
If you have a normal delivery chances of your baby easily accepting your feed are higher than if you need a cesarean. There are many reasons for this. Keep in mind the following points and be prepared while you're pregnant not after you've delivered.

1. If you have to undergo cesarean you will be away from the baby for a longer period depending on the hospital you're in.

2. You will be given I.V. which delays breastmilk

3. Breasts need to be properly massaged to help the milk flow.

4. A lot of gynaecologists do not inspect the breasts for any issues while you are pregnant. Talk to yours before hand and make sure she is able to guide you well before time.

5. Make sure the hospital allows your baby to latch within 4 to 6 hours of delivery, even if it was a surgery. This is very very important and unfortunately ignored by a majority of hospitals.

6. Even if you're baby doesn't latch at first keep trying. If your baby doesn't take the feed your body gets the signal that milk is not needed and it will slowly stop producing milk, it's a vicious cycle. This is where a breast pump comes in handy. Keep pumping to tell your body that you need the milk.

7. Stay happy and stress free - one very important point and yet the most difficult when you are trying to breastfeed but are not successful. I have cried every single day yet consoled myself by holding my baby knowing that eventually things will settle down.

8. Do not bottle feed unless it becomes an absolute must. Bottle nipples make it very hard to switch the baby to the breast (yes even the costly branded ones like Avent are pathetic)

9. Use a spoon or a paladai - see image below if you need to formula feed your baby.

Paladai - new born feeder
Paladai - Newborn Feeder

I hope I've covered a majority of the points above. In case you have your own experiences please do share in the comments. Also let me know if you have questions and I will try to answer to the best of my knowledge.

And now coming to nursing in style.
The first time you nurse will be at the hospital so one piece of clothing that you need in your hospital bag is a nursing gown.

Standard nursing gowns are very  frankly not stylish or comfortable. When looking for options for myself I came across a brand on Instagram called Team Mumsie. They have these really cute nursing gowns which can be worn like a dress  and come with matching onesies and swaddle cloth  for your little one. They also have kaftans that  come in pretty prints.

Team.mumsie, nursing gown, dress

(Excuse my super exhausted pictures with unkept hair, I'm still a mess!)

I picked out a dark blue set for my hospital bag. The nursing dress looks really cute but look at that tiny onesie, isn't it adorable!!!! In a diagonal from the neck to the armpit area the gown has buttons which can be opened to nurse. When closed it is a pretty dress with a contrast belt.

Onesie, hospital nursing gown

I couldn't actually wear this at the hospital since I was in a lot of pain after my surgery but once I could get up on my own I put this to good use. I also teamed it up with my existing maternity leggings on days when it was cold and it still looked just as stylish. If you are looking for a nursing gown do visit the team.mumsie page and get yourself and your little one a cute option to stay stylish.
***

Another option for nursing in public is a poncho. I chose one from Pluchi, another brand I stumbled across on Instagram. This poncho was on my baby wishlist because of two reasons. The poncho can be worn before nursing, as a cover-up, it can be worn later on as well like a regular poncho. But the reason I picked up a poncho from Pluchi was mainly because of the very cute matching blanket and toy sets that they offer.

Pluchi ponchu

I wore this poncho to work when the days started to get slightly cooler, I teamed it up with a fitted t-shirt (one that would look weird had I not worn this poncho) and my maternity jeans from H&M. The material is 100% cotton but the knit makes it super soft and warm. My baby loves being swaddled in the matching blanket and the toy is his very first teddy.

Pluchi kids blanket with toy

I will surely recommend you check out Pluchistore page for all the color options. These would be really nice as baby shower gifts as well.
***
Other nursing options include a full zippered gown, tank tops which come with a detachable front, and nursing bras. You can check out some of these at H&M and Inner Sense on amazon. I also found off shoulder dresses helpful, the ones that have an elasticated neckline.

Say goodbye to hiding under shawls and boring gowns, stay happy as you nurse your little one in style.

5 Must Have Kurta Styles

Kurtas are a staple in every girls wardrobe. Whether you look at the girl next door or idolize the ease with which celebrities like Deepika Padukone make the Kurta look ever so chic, a kurta brings in comfort like no other garment.

I love wearing kurtas to work, to the market and specially for a get together with traditional attire as the dress theme.

Here are 5 must have Kurta styles that will ensure your wardrobe is ready for any occasion.

1. The Straight Cut Kurta
A straight cut kurta suits all body shapes. It elongates your silhouette and gives a crisp appearance. This is highly suited for work as well as a formal setting. You can bling it up or tone it down as per the occasion. To give it a twist, team it with pants instead of a churidar.

Allen Solly - Solly Sports Wimbledon Collection In Stores

Allen Solly's Solly Sports Wimbledon collection is in stores. We decided to visit the store at Connaught Place, New Delhi to bring some window shopping to your desktop!

Allen Solly - Solly Sports Wimbledon Collection In Stores, sollysportcentrecourt, playitfair

The entire store is so colourful with the pieces from the collection. We visited the menswear section and were impressed with how Solly Sport has tied in the Wimbledon theme into casual wear like never before. The colors are bright and summery while the lines and cuts are sharp.

From t-shirts, polo necks, to the breezy summer jackets, we loved them all.

The collection has something for everyone. There are simple t-shirts with a Wimbledon text or a two toned design. There are polos in summery colors like coral, pale blue, and sea green for the young at heart and polos in deep dark tones for those of you who like to keep it toned down - a bit more sophisticated styling we may say!

Do You #PlayItFair?

What does Play It Fair mean to you?

If you talk about sports, fair play is an essential requirement. With Wimbledon around the corner, fair play is ringing bells all around us. Tennis has always been a sport where men and women are paid equal prize money thus playing it fair to both.

Even in India now a lot of emphasis is being given on equal opportunities for girls and guys in all domains in life. While girls are encouraged to participate in sports, we have some great make up artists who are guys and constantly surrounded by traditional 'girly' lipsticks, foundations and what not!

To me every walk of life deserves fair play. Even fashion!

Allen Solly launched a whole collection of clothing for both men and women in keeping the theme of Wimbledon in mind. You must have read my post where I picked out a few outfits I thought were apt if you are headed out to watch the matches. If you haven't you can check out the post Dressing Up For Wimbledon.

Today I'm sharing a few instances in life, simple everyday things, where you can Play It Fair.

To me Play It Fair is synonymous to living life being fair to your friends, family, your work, and most of all to yourself.

Let's say you are out to purchase some fruit, don't haggle unnecessarily with the poor fruit seller for a few rupees when you are willing to pay four times the price at a store. This is fair play in your daily human interactions.

Headed out on a hot sunny day, dress well in keeping the weather in mind. Don't dress to please others or simply to sport the latest trend, dress for your own comfort, for your body shape - be fair to yourself!

If you have lots of clothes lying around that you haven't worn for ages, give them away. Let someone else have the privilege to own them and become a fashionista in their own world.

I recently posted a few images on Instagram and my other social media channels interpreting #PlayItFair in my own world. Here's a short video of it all in case you missed it.

And here is a nail art I did that you can see in the video above. I love how this came out!

Cannes 2016 - Sonam Kapoor's Saree Inspired Nail Art

This year when Sonam Kapoor made her first appearance at a press conference in Cannes she decided to wear a saree by Rimzim Dadu.

Rimzim Dadu is a designer who showcased a lot of new textures and materials at the Amazon India Fashion Week this year.

The saree that Sonam donned was quite interesting in terms of texture.

A stark black flowy fabric teamed with a shiny blue pallu that almost looked as if it was metallic due to the way the different tones of blue where interplayed.

When I saw this pic of Sonam Kapoor it just inspired me to do nail art keeping the same color scheme in mind.

Mint Summer Dressing

Do you get drawn to a particular color and then end up liking everything in that same shade? It happens to me a lot. I have had these phases where I would love onion pink, then last winters anything fuchsia would grab my attention. A few days back I spotted these two gorgeous pieces online and have since been attracted to mint completely! Mint is such a refreshing shade for summers so I finally added some mint magic to my wardrobe.

I chose to keep the accessories minimal as I was headed out. I paired my mint shirt with a pair of denims, picked up my mint sling bag, and chose my flat ballerinas to keep my feet feeling happy with all the walking I had to do.

Dressing Up For Wimbledon #PlayItFair

This year's Wimbledon is slated for 27 June to 10 July in London. Allen Solly has come out with a special range of outfits dedicated on the theme of Wimbledon.

If you had to go see one of the matches what type of outfits would you wear? I got thinking if I had the chance to go what would I wear? Since its a sports event I would like to remain in that spirit and dress up in something casual, a hint of sporty, and surely comfortable yet stylish!
Dressing Up For Wimbledon #PlayItFair, tan handbag, allen silly
Dressing Up For Wimbledon #PlayItFair

For females a few ideas that come to mind are skater dresses, a comfy pair of jeans with a striped t-shirt, a pair of shorts with a tank top and a shrug thrown over, a short denim skirt with a summery blouse. Since palazzos and loose trousers are very much in vogue I would love to wear one paired with a flat pair of sandals! For footwear keds, sports shoes, printed sneakers, all appear sporty, comfortable and very much fashionable.

Here are some outfit ideas - including my picks from the new collection at Allen Solly

The World Of Sweatshirts & Our Floral Tryst

Sweatshirts are normally considered a comfortable piece of clothing to keep you snug when the winter sets in. Made of knit fleece its usually lose fitted and great for athletic wear.

From plain grays and blues sweatshirts made their way into a women's wardrobe in rich tones of red, green and even pastel tones.
With time designers started bringing in a touch of glamour by adding details like embroidered slogans, company logos and the like.

Sweatshirts are a staple that I believe all of us should have in our winter wardrobe. And if you love all things girly like me, then its time to storm into this world of manly comfort and merge our world of florals with the world of sweatshirts!

Floral sweatshirts add the perfect feminine touch to an otherwise 'manly' piece of clothing. You can find several different floral prints out there. Roses are what we chose for our day out in the city.
A navy blue sweatshirt with bright red and pink floral pattern on the front is our pick. Teamed with a pale blue pair of denims, a pair of flat ballerinas and we are set to hit the city looking chic! We accessorised the look with a dainty silver necklace and ear studs.

Leggings, Jeggings, and Treggings - What's The Difference?

We started off with the humble churidar made of cotton or silk but with lycra entering into our lives big time, our life actually changed, and for the better.
When leggings initially entered the Indian market girls would be seen wearing them with the humble kurti. The leggings would offer more comfort whilst being easy to wash and care for.
Then came the era when we got flooded with different varieties of these skinny pants and the world went topsy turvy. I have spotted so many young girls making a huge fashion faux pas in terms of how they style their leggings and that is what bought out this post where I'm going to put forth the basic difference between leggings, jeggings and treggings.

leggings as pants, jeggings, treggings, how not to wear leggings, how to style jeggings, fashion blog
Leggings, Jeggings, and Treggings - What's The Difference?

Leggings are tight fitting pants that are usually made from a blend of lycra and spandex with cotton or polyester. Leggings are not the same as tights. Tights are translucent and usually worn with short skirts and dresses to prevent skin show. Leggings are thicker than tights but not too thick. Leggings are worn safely with tunics or tops that land below your hips. It looks ugly if you are wearing a short shirt and your dearie is not well supported by your legwear. Wear your leggings with short skirts, shorts, tunic tops and with your kurti for added comfort.

Hi friends! I have been missing since a long time now. A lot happened over the past month and those of you who follow me on Instagram thanks for your support!

Before I ramble on about new changes here at Our External World let me first share a quick outfit-of-the-day. Summers have finally gone and while the weather is a getting a bit gloomy I decided to add some spunk to my day with a bright floral shrug

OOTD: Wear Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness

October is the month for Breast Cancer Awareness. Across the globe people wear pink to raise awareness. You can head on over to http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org to read more about the disease.

I decided to pick out a pair of coral pink dungarees from Stalkbuylove.com when I saw their Pink Ribbon campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness.

The dungarees are made of linen which is such a life save in the humid weather. I decided to do two looks. The first is a casual day out with friends. You can wear the dungarees with a soft cream t-shirt, add a pair of heels and you are set.

The second look is for a more formal occasion - lets say you need to head out to a meeting. You can still raise awareness by wearing the same pair of dungarees to work. Add on a matching coral shrug, tie up your hair, and voila! You are ready to look more serious despite the bubbly coral shade of your outfit.

Going Black and White!

Hello everyone! Today's post is all about dressing up - literally going all black-and-white!

When in doubt team up black and white for any occasion. A black kurti with white leggings, a white shirt with black jeans, black skirt or black pants, a shimmering black saree with a hint of white diamonte border - it just works. And the best thing about wearing black is that it makes us look thin!

I teamed up a white shirt with a cat bow tie collar and black piping with my favourite black and white printed pants (that you also saw me wearing in my post about Clarks Shoes)

I wore this to the event by Caratlane almost a month back. I was heading to the event straight from work so this was outfit worked from day to night. It was comfortable all day. I just added a bit of makeup to remove the tired look on my face and I was good to go.

I decided to wear plain black sandals and took along my reliable black and white handbag. I love this handbag as it looks really slim but can house a lot of stuff. The white part with the button closure cleverly hides a pocket for keeping change, tissue and a metro card. There is an additional pocket inside along with a slot to hold your phone.

How To Style Printed Palazzo Pants For Work

I am back with another styling post. Palazzo pants are all over the place in terms of fashion. Plain palazzos, printed palazzos, cotton palazzos, flowy georgette palazzos, and the list goes on.

I recently spotted a pair of printed palazzos and bought them to wear to work. Palazzos are so much more comfortable in summers as compared to jeans or other pants. When you wear palazzos you have many options of how you can style them. Since palazzos are flowy you can team them up with a fitted  shirt. You can team a solid coloured palazzo with a short kurti. You can also pair it with a crop top if you have the body to flaunt it.

I wanted to wear my palazzo pants to work and hence decided to team them up with a solid fawn coloured top. The top is made of georgette while the palazzos are made of rayon. It has a button fastening like pants and two side pockets.

You Shine With YouShine.in - Online Jewellery Store

I recently checked out a few products on this online website called YouShine.in - they have some really nice jewellery pieces with a mix of traditional and modern designs. I picked out a few pieces from their collection.

The first piece I picked is a pair of emerald green earnings with lime green and clear crystals. I particularly liked these earrings for the kind of back closure they have. No screws means no irritation to my sensitive ear skin.

Head Over Heels - Summer Pink With Intoto Shoes

For me summers are all about peaches and pinks. For fabrics I love to wear light weight chiffons and comfortable cottons. Recently for a lunch out I decided to wear a coral pink dress and teamed it up with my new shoes from Intoto.in

I kept my hair open (had just washed them and I like drying my hair naturally without any heating tools, and with the kind of summers we have it takes about half an hour and the hair dries out without any help!

The shoes I am wearing are pretty pink heels called Head Over Heels by Intoto. You take one look at them and do fall head over heels in love with them!
